I think a lot of the people posting here don’t realize that the landing at the top probably isn’t the end of the stairs. In the subway stations where people line up for the escalators like this it’s not uncommon to see three to five times as many steps to the surface as are shown in the picture. The escalators are continuos as well, so you have to choose at the bottom which way you’re going to go.

I am pretty sure this is Mexico City. You have to think before calling people lazy, many people work 48 hour weeks with an added 20 or more for travel time. Also I reckon this is a two or 3 stair deep metro, which trust me, is a lot to be walking up for anyone.

I wonder if people would still be queuing if this was at the bottom:-

I know lots of people will jump on the “lazy” bandwagon, but depending on where this is… it is completely normal. For example, after a 14 hour flight to Taipei, I didn’t want to use ANY stairs at the airport.

I’ve been to movie screenings like this, where you can’t step out of line or you won’t get into your theater. If they tell everyone in line to take the escalator to stay together and stay segregated from the general public, then that’s what you do. It was the same thing picking up badges at Comic-Con. The whole line took the same escalator because we were required to. No one else could use that escalator, because it was designated for the badges line only. In this picture, the tall guy in the suit looks like he’s directing traffic onto the escalator. There’s probably another guy at the top making sure the crowd continues to stay together. Why is everyone looking at this and assuming that the entire crowd is lazy?

I wouldn’t assume they are lazy. I’ve been to many cities where the metro is pretty convenient and in cities like that it’s a “walking” city. When you need to walk all day or have walked all day, the last thing you want to do is waste energy on stairs.

I don’t know, I used to take the L subway line in Brooklyn, and the escalator was broken for a while at Broadway Junction. It’s a pretty large section of stairs, and then another to get over the tracks. I did it cause I had to, but it was unpleasant. Once they fixed the escalator that was the end of the stairs for me.

Funniest thing was when I was in China I almost always took the stairs when I could. It was because of those China escalator killing people right around the time I went. It wa pretty good exercise as there gym there was bad. I like to take stairs when it’s one flight.

I used to work by a subway stop with a similar length escalator, and naturally stairs right next to it. 9 times out of 10 i’d take the stairs, especially if it was like this. Aside from exercise, it was just quicker.

But, if its a hot humid monday morning, you are a bit hungover, wearing a suit, with a heavy bag with you? Yea, fuck that. I’m waiting for the escalator.

Don’t know where this is, but I London Underground has a few deep stations where the stairs are an option but a long trek not worth attempting if tired or carrying stuff.

The stairs and escalators probably lead to two different places. I’ve seen things like this where the stairs will only take you up 1 level to the next platform while the escalator will take you up about 4 levels straight to the exit.

In Helsinki we don’t usually even have stairs, it’s all just escalators, and I can see why, as the stairs would be 30-80 meters long

Edit: as are the escalators too

I used to play capture the flag on my college campus with a group of people. One night we had played on the lower level of a parking garage due to rain. After the game was over we all went to leave, but the escalator was stopped. Taking Mitch Hedberg’s approach, we started walking up the escalator. I’m guessing that it was legitimately broken, because halfway up the group of us at the front started to notice the escalator moving. Backwards. The weight of everyone trying to walk up was pulling it back down. I and a few others were able to race to the top, but a majority ended up in an unhappy pile at the bottom.

I actually got a friendly talk with security on Ben Gurion airport in Israel for not taking the escalator. I was the only one who walked up and they found it strange to that degree. Of course they are just doing their job and were very polite and professional about it, but it was sad that normal profile right now is laziness.

I think what most people are failing to understand is this is most likely a new escalator that opened in their town/city and everyone is just excited to take their first ride on an escalator. I can almost guarantee you that that’s what is happening here. Escalators aren’t common place everywhere.

This seems funny to people in the U.S., but in places that are not very drivable and your hour commute consists of walking miles going up and down stairs transferring from subway to subway instead of just sitting on your ass in a car the entire time, you will take the escalator.
