The opportunity

If you want to enter the world of digital media and be part of the change and growth of one of Canada’s long-established and respected broadcasters, this is your chance. The CBC Digital Audio Products team is looking for a UI Designer. This is a 12-month contract opportunity focused on producing a unified Listen web platform. This is a brand-new initiative that will bring together all of the CBC’s audio files; from live Talk and News broadcasts to podcasts to concerts to every current and archived music file.

Our new UI Designer is at artist-at-heart who will bring a depth and breadth of skills to our team and work side-by-side with our current Senior Designer. This is an exceptionally exciting opportunity to help form the Canadian Audio experience not just for this generation but for the future.

Who you are and where are you now?

You are an artist. A well-rounded designer, creative thinker and detail-oriented digital craftsperson. You believe that great design is more than simply a beautiful interface, but extends into the design of the product, the brand and the audience experience. You are able to thoughtfully contribute at all stages of the product life-cycle, including audience research, design briefing, design review, implementation, quality assurance and testing. You are seeking an opportunity to work on an expansive product that will highlight your talent while contributing to a greater cause. How you will make a difference on a daily basis:

  • Design a cross-platform world class experience that includes, responsive web, native apps (Android, iOS & TvOS) and  emerging technologies.
  • Work directly with User Researchers and audience stakeholders to design Canada’s leading Digital Audio Producer’s digital experience.
  • Experiment and learn using A/B testing, behaviour analysis and segmentation research to iterate our products into truly lovable products.


What you bring:

  • The well-round combination of education and experience. A post-secondary degree with an arts or design-related focus is preferred, but we know not everyone gains their design skills this way. You have a background in digital interface/interaction design and 1-3 years working on in-market digital products including experience with:
    • Digital design and production.
    • User-centered design methodologies.
    • User research and usability testing.
    • Designing for mobile and tablet interfaces.
    • Producing grid-based designs and page layouts.
    • Prototyping.
  • The technical expertise. You have hands-on professional experience using the Adobe Creative Suite, HTML and CSS. You have a strong understanding of information architecture.
  • The passion. You have a passion for information and technology and you are enthusiastic about the opportunity to link the two pieces together.
  • The desire to learn. You have the ability to quickly learn new technologies and respond to change by learning and adapting.
  • The communication skills. You know how to listen and relay empathy and understanding for diverse perspectives.
  • The confidence and the humility. Your powers of observation help you understand your audience and communicate with the right level of detail. You are open to the ideas of others.
  • The creativity and adaptability. You can adapt quickly, innovate solutions and embrace the new while accepting the ambiguous.
  • The Agile experience. You believe in the Agile methodology deeply but you are flexible and open to the real world twists and turns.
  • The extra knowledge. An understanding of accessibility standards would be an asset.

From reviewing Apple Developer videos and learning new programming languages to creating improved search functions for our media. From updating old code to building unit testing tools. Your 20% time is yours to allocate in a productive and professionally gratifying way.
