According to the website itself: Boil the Frog lets you create a playlist of songs that gradually takes you from one music style to another. It’s like the proverbial frog in the pot of water. If you heat up the pot slowly enough, the frog will never notice that he’s being made into a stew and jump out of the pot. With a Boil the frog playlist you can do the same, but with music. You can generate a playlist that will take the listener from one style of music to the other, without the listener ever noticing that they are being made into a stew.

I’m using it right now for the first time, so I can’t really comment on the validity of their claim… but it’s certainly a really damn cool idea. I’ll give an update if my “from Maya Jane Coles to Boris” mix actually worked out.

So what you’re saying is that i can develop playlists based on any artist that will, gradually and naturally, rickroll the listener.

If you do Pantera and Beethoven you get to listen to Spongebob, Sesame Street, and Power Rangers. I’m not sure whats going on…

I tried Dave Matthews and Lupe Fiasco and it did pretty damn good.

Tried Beethoven and Run the Jewels and it struggled hard to get out of classical, taking me through three different versions of the same song, Baby Einstein and one song that I can only describe as atonal harpsichord-robot-stuttering Macy Gray fusion.

I put in Ween and Behemoth. I entered them in 10 minutes ago.

Either this site’s getting the Reddit hug of death or I chose my artists rather poorly.

Very cool concept – though I expected more than 10 tracks. Still – thanks for finding this – I’ll check it out tomorrow.

That’s… something else. Time to put in Mozart and Eminem

Edit: I have tried it out for myself. I have come to the conclusion that the Five Degrees of Bacon theory can be applied to anything if you try hard enough, including music.

    Edit 2; Nah didn’t y’all hear? They’ve demoted it to 5 degrees…

Weird thing is, Peter Gabriel and or Genesis seem to act as a core link between a lot of my extreme choices (ie Slayer and The Smiths) despite that fact that I don’t particularly enjoy their body of work.

Nice. I play a similar game myself some nights when I am deep into Spotify, seeing if I can get myself from wherever I am back up to Kanye West. I am not sure why I started using Kanye as my marker, but it’s fun.

I’m trying to do Nirvana & Tupac, but apperently this website doesn’t know who Tupac is since it can’t find it. WTF?

Edit: It accepts “2pac” and I somehow ended up with a Christmas Muppets song in between Nirvana & Tupac..

    I like this.

So as an acid test, I tried inputting american artists and indian artists, and there was a pretty defined noticeable point at which the country / language / genre switched. (And it is totally possible to not do that, there’s lots of intermediate songs which mix english to increasing degrees)

    Very cool idea though!

Edit: I played around more and it got more interesting. bollywood and american rock and roll got connected through various African-language songs, bollywood and jamican dancehall are connected via reggaeton, and kpop apparently doesnt’ exist on spotify.

Edit: Now listening to it. Marc Ribot to Painkiller is a hard fucking fail.
Edit2: So it’s playing metal. Goes from Graveworm and Agathodaimon then just before Emperor…electronic RAP music. What the flying fuck?
