This is exactly my favorite breakfast place back in my hometown. They open whenever they want, and close the whole day maybe because someone is married (a suburb place). Deciding to have breakfast there is a risk. But whenever they are open, it’s always full

Shit I live in a pretty small town and there is one shop that basically just sells some random crap this guy finds. His store is huge and stuffed full.
However, it is never actually open. His phone number is written on a napkin on the front door.
You’re supposed to call him and wait for him to arrive to peruse junk.

I want to work there… Something about making my own hours seems oddly satisfying.

I don’t really care if I have to stand outside and chop wood. As long as my rent is paid and I have food, I think that kind of freedom is what we can only ask for no?

When I owned a cafe/ Live music/beer haus, our hours were posted on the door and online as **Early to Late, (usually)**

Sometimes our alcoholic baker would be in at 3am, sometimes he wouldn’t show at all. Man, he was nasty, but people loved him. If I stopped by at 6am and he *was* there, he’d already have a dozen empty cheap beer cans in recycling, like Coors Light, or whatever… even though we have a menu of 100 of the best beers in the world. His tip jar would be overflowing as he told everyone be from contractors to the DA they looked like shit, or whatever other funny alcoholic ramblings came to his marinated mind.

The open to late usually part was cuz I was a night owl so sometimes I’d just stay until he came in… or didn’t come in. Other times I’d head to a movie at 9pm if it was dead. What else would I have posted for hours?

I visited my grandparents in Blackfoot Idaho last summer and there were signs similar to this all over. The most memorable was a gas station that opened at 5pm and closed at 8pm. It would be funny if it was a joke but the damn stores are never open.

There used to be jewelry/camera/bicycle/eclectic-second-hand shop near downtown Cincinnati that held similar hours. It’s been closed now for quite some time.

When it was in business, the proprietor would just come in and open the store when he felt like it. He was great at truing bicycle wheels, but you pretty much had to call him and ask him to open the shop if you wanted to visit. The place was amazing and truly worth the hassle.

Sounds like this Thai restaurant above which I used to live. They had posted hours, but they were so short-staffed that they couldn’t actually stay open through those hours even with their staff in full attendance (let alone if someone had to take the day off). Tried to take friends and family there a couple times, but every time they’d end up being unexpectedly closed.

I like the French approach to work ethics : instead of everyone being miserable at work but getting flawless service whenever it’s their turn to be customers (American-like society); everyone has an easier time at work by doing it half-assed and taking lots of breaks and having shorter shafts and then gets shitty service as customers. You spent more of your life working than being a customer after all.
