Texas Star Jones Receives Heartbreaking Diagnosis

8 min read

God is always in control, and even though we face hardships in life, we have to trust in his perfect plan. A cancer diagnosis is life-changing news that no one ever wants to hear. Cancer has touched the lives of people all over the world, almost everyone either knows someone diagnosed with the disease or has been diagnosed themselves. And, cancer doesn’t care who you are, whether you are young or old, rich or poor, famous or just an average Joe, cancer can happen to anyone.

Our thoughts and prayers are with college basketball player Andrew Jones this morning after he announced a heartbreaking diagnosis: he has leukemia. Jones, who is a guard for The University of Texas, wasn’t feeling normal at practice, but the training staff wasn’t able to figure out what was wrong. Then, on Wednesday, the school made the heartbreaking announcement about Jones’ diagnosis. A statement from Jones’ family said Andrew had been undergoing “a number of tests and evaluations over the past week. He has begun treatments, and we hope everyone will keep him in your thoughts and prayers,” the family statement said. “This is obviously a difficult situation for our family, and we hope everyone will respect our privacy at this time.”

Jones’ coach, Shaka Smart, is very worried about the player and vows to do whatever he can to support the star player and his family. “Speaking for our entire team and staff, we love Andrew and will do everything we can to support his family and help him get back to health,” Smart said in a statement. “I want to thank everyone for being respectful of the privacy that the Jones family needs at this time.”

Back on New Year’s Day, Jones hinted that something might be going on when he tweeted “Stay focus and let God’s plan for me take its course.” The 6-foot-4 guard from Irving MacArthur missed four games due to a hairline fracture in his right wrist after falling twice against Virginia Commonwealth on Dec. 5. Prior to the injury, Jones was on a roll. He scored a career-high 19 points that night in Richmond, Va., and was averaging 16.6 points in the last five games. A team spokesman said Jones felt under the weather just before a game at Iowa State on Jan. 1, but he still played. Jones logged 11 minutes and scored eight points. Afterward, Smart said Jones’ wrist was no longer bothering him, but something else was robbing his leading scorer of energy. Now, it’s unclear whether Jones will attend any more home games this season to support his Longhorns.

“We know Andrew’s a fighter with a strong family and our thoughts, prayers, and support are fully behind them,” UT athletic director Chris Del Conte said in a statement. “At the University of Texas, we will do everything in our power to provide all of the resources we can to assist Andrew and his family.”

Please pray along with us: “Dear heavenly father, please be with Andrew Jones and his family today. We pray that Jones would be encouraged by you today and that you would place the right people in his life to become his support system. Please help him to feel your peace today and guide the doctors as they figure out the best way to treat his leukemia. We trust you, Jesus, and pray all of this in your name, Amen.”

Dear Sister and Brother,

1. God is in control

2. Life is not always fair, it rains on the just and the unjust…we should not compare our lives to others but focus on the plan God has for us.

3. Bad things will happen in this world, but God promised us a home in heaven if we believe in Jesus. One without sorrow, pain or death…where we never will grow old.

Please share this story and ask your friends to pray for Andrew Jones.

God bless you and your family,
Aaron Tabor, MD
