Strangers Help Father Fulfil Autistic Son's Christmas Wish With The Help Of Social Media

12 min read

Generosity and helpful nature are two great gifts we treasure. God created each one of us in His own image. The Father who is forever merciful instilled His greatness into us. “One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” Proverbs 11:24-25

Generosity defines who we are more than our thoughts. In a world which is growingly becoming intolerant, an act of kindness brings hope that all is not lost. One such incident of strangers helping an unknown man fulfilling his son’s Christmas wish is definitely worth a read.

Christmas is that time of the year when wishes come true. Parents leave no stone unturned when it comes to rushing around and getting the gifts everyone asked for. A father from London was no different. When professional musician James Dutton and his ex-wife, Cindy, began a quest to find a lost tape for their son as a Christmas present, they were clueless on how to get their hands on a VHS tape. Thomas, a 19-year-old with autism, made a list of things he wanted for Christmas and on that was a discontinued animated series called ‘Postman Pat.’ Postman Pat is a classic stop-motion popular British children’s show and Thomas grew fond it watching videos on YouTube. The series was popular when VHS tapes were in use. VHS and the series are now obsolete and getting either is difficult and close to impossible.

James was determined to find the tape for his son and took to social media to inquire if anyone had any leads. He used Twitter and Facebook to find out if anyone had the VHS tape of the series explaining that his autistic son had demanded it for Christmas. James did not have to wait long, within 48 hours, his request was answered. His search received a boost when a reality show British celebrity retweeted James’ request. Jill Hulme came across the report through Brendan Cole, who stars in the series “Strictly Come Dancing” who had shared James’ tweet. Jill commented that she was in possession of the tape and was planning on donating it to charity. She also added that it was wonderful that she could be a part of such a heartwarming story. Mother of three boys, Jill exclaimed that when she shared the news with her children, they were extremely pleased that Thomas was about to get a wonderful Christmas present.

James turned to Twitter again to inform that his search was a success, all thanks to the many unknown faces and a celebrity support. In a parting note, James added that the greatest thing he took away from the whole incident is that social media is a powerful tool which brings back faith in humanity and kindness of complete strangers.

Other stories of kindness shared on social media

Social media is a blank canvas which is used to reflect the needs of each individual user. While there are many who spread hate and unrest, there are equal numbers who stand up against injustice. There are many videos making rounds of teenagers buying food for the homeless or children spending their saved money on meals for those in need.

Another story which is worth sharing is that of a court clerk who went through a rough patch and ended up losing his job and then his home. A man of honor that he was, he refused to stay with relatives and become a burden and instead chose to move from one shelter to another. One morning he found a backpack containing over £28,000. We would assume that a man like him, who is desperately in need of cash, would have kept it for himself and gotten his life back on track. But, he did not. He returned the money to the owner who shared the news on social media. The story gained traction and one stranger who saw it, set up a GoFundMe project and raised close to $100,000 which was presented to the clerk to get his life back on.

A second story is about an adult who lost his legs in a cycling accident. A few years ago, this man had raised enough money to avail stem cell operation when he came across a similar case of a five-year-old boy. The boy suffered from cerebral palsy and had never walked in 5 years. His parents were raising enough funds for a procedure called selective dorsal rhizotomy. The man donated his funds to help the boy walk. Such is the power of social media. It brings together strangers who are miles apart but are passionate about offering a helping hand.

Stories of kindness, virtue, and love elate the drowning human spirit. They inspire those reading to follow and make an example. There are many social media campaigns which promote random acts of kindness. One act of kindness helps another, who in turn makes someone else’s day. A chain of kindness is what the world needs right now. When the news is filled with terror and unfathomable crimes against one another, there is a cloud of hope spread by such incidents of positivity.

Life is not a race to the finish and about who gets that promotion first or a fancy car, it is all about living each day receiving and helping others. Positivity in the world must become an inescapable reality and grow so strong that it overshadows everything negative happening around us. What people see, people do. When you come across stories like these on a public platform, it becomes your responsibility to share with the rest of the world. You may never know what a kind smile or a compliment can do a stranger. Most of us are swamped with our daily mundane lives and often forget that everyone we come across is a fighting a battle of their own. Do a good deed today, help someone in need and if you have in possession something that others value more, give it away.

Share this story and encourage others to show love this holiday season!
