I fight this within myself all time. When I see a group of normal looking dudes and one exceptionally pretty girl I find myself thinking “There’s no way she’s actually into this stuff.” then I have to tell myself “Why can’t she actually be into video games? Just because she’s a pretty girl it doesn’t mean she can’t enjoy an Elder Scroll or two.”

It’s not just games and comics. Worked at a home improvement store and had my female manager ask me to tell a guy an answer to his question. Apparently, he did not believe a woman knew about plumbing. He was a dick

    Fun fact:

Blood type is like astrology in Japan. It has historically been linked to personality, compatibility, and temperament. That’s why a lot of games, especially around the 90s, had blood type shown in character stat screens.
    Street Fighter 2 for example:

I work at a video game store where half our staff is female. We get these types in.

Had a guy on the phone literally ask for someone else and he must’ve thought I took the phone away from my ear when he said “this chick doesn’t know what the eff she’s talking about.” I was quoting him on game trade in and gave him a range (like I’m supposed to) based on what shape the disc was in and whether it had a case. -.-

Its okay he got my male supervisor who was very nonchalant with him once he heard how he treated me. ^.^

I enjoy playing video games like Destiny 2 and Halo and COD. I’ve been playing video games since the Super Nintendo came out and I gave every Xbox console.

I took a hiatus for a couple of years to explore other hobbies and recently picked it back up. By then, my husband stole my gamer tag and made a crew of online friends, so I created a new gamer tag and started to play with them.

First words out of their mouth when I started playing: “Oh, I guess every team needs a healer”

And it progressed to “I’ve never met a real gamer girl before” (after being quizzed on my past video game experience)

But my favorite one from an internet stranger when he overheard me talking to my team through my husband’s mic: “Could you tell your wife to quiet down or go back to the kitchen?”

(For the record, we have two TVs in our living room so we can play games simultaneously)

Even so, no one quite made as big of a deal of me being a woman playing video games as another online female gamer, who rambles for a solid 30 minutes each time I get on about how great it is that I play with my husband and practicing is good and “don’t forget to move when you shoot!”

My experience being a female and playing mostly online games has been ~95% positive. (I play from around 10pm onwards so generally don’t come across those shrill 12 y/o’s very often). Can’t speak for everyone else but I’m glad that the gaming community has been super friendly and made my hobby more enjoyable. If these guys exist, which I’m sure they do, they’re certainly in the vast minority

I’m a guy in my 40’s. When I was young, most girls made fun of me for being a gamer. They considered it a stupid waste of time. Later in life I had girlfriends that were jealous of any time I spent gaming with friends. I tried to get them interested, but again, they saw games as a stupid waste of time. They thought I should “grow up”.

I’m glad more women like to game now, but you know, I kind of wish women hadn’t looked down on me and treated me poorly for liking to play video games.

“Gate keeping” I think is the term coined for it, and it’s freaking annoying. Essentially we are not allowed to have a passive interest in anything, and we are not allowed to like anything a lot without knowing what shoe size the musician/game designer/ Bob Kane has. 🙄

This is absolutely not an issue in China. I just moved here and contrary to what I’m used to, more girls play games than guys. PUBG/Fortnite? Girls. Moba games like DotA2/LOL? Girls.

They’re not even just the nerdy variety either. I was reading at the coffee shop this weekend there were two cute girls next to me sipping on their matchas, eating cake, and wrecking noobs.

I’ve always been a gamer, and yeah I’m female, so I can relate to this a bit.

I find it’s not as bad as it used to be. When I was younger I found that “boys” liked to question my skills or knowledge a lot more than they do now. Maybe because I’m older now and often find people my own age to play with, so there is a lot more respect there than when I was young. Though I won’t deny that I get some fucking weirdos too. I either get the “Snapchat guys” that always want to add me and find out what I look like, the overly sexual pervy dudes, or the guys advertised in this comic who question everything I say regarding games and annoy me all the time. Honestly I just love video games, and I don’t really give a shit if I ever get accepted by these dorky guys.

They’ll always have their virginity to cherish. 😉

I (a female) work at a game store and men and women are often genuinely surprised when I tell them I play games. Just yesterday, a man said I knew guys played games, but I didn’t know girls did, too! I informed him that nearly half of the gaming community was female and he found it hard to believe.

Super late to this, but I’m also a girl gamer and I’ve had to deal with an interesting side effect of this thought process.

I never really got the hang of first person shooters. As a child, they triggered my motion sickness. As an adult, I tried to pick up Destiny 1. I worked my way through it and I’m not half bad. Now, I play Destiny 2. But I had a real issue for those first few months from Imposter Syndrome. I felt like the chick at the frat party with the fake ID. At any moment, someone might notice that I don’t belong and blast me for being there. I even had a guy friend begin leaving the room any time I wanted to talk about Destiny.

Now? I can play with the rest of them. Boom, headshot.

This is very inaccurate to what people have a problem with. It’s not about playing games, we have all played a game at some point. It’s the use of the term “Gamer”. It’s become the new popular thing to be, and it’s frustrating because a lot of us lived the negative social interactions growing up that came with being a gamer. Having someone play a couple of games of PUBG and claim to be a “Gamer” is like calling myself an artist because I draw stick figure characters. And with any hobby that someone loves, when you claim to be as passionate as they are they want to know if you have experienced some of the great works that anyone who loves the medium should experience. It’s the same with any medium, drinking a glass of wine does not make one a wine aficionado in the same way as reading Harry Potter collecting doesn’t make you an enthusiast of literary works. Can you like doing these things? Absolutely, and it’s encouraged that everyone and anyone take up some of these great mediums and soak in how amazing they are and can be. But if you claim to be an enthusiast expect that other passionate enthusiast will want to know how valid that claim is and discuss with you in-depth on the subject.

This was really bad a couple of years ago but it is slowly, very slowly getting better. The same problem is that it comes from people not controlling the urge to attack the outsider (which male nerds do to other male nerds too) and not realise lots of their lifestyle choices have caused the problems they complain over ie loneliness, depression, poor prospects, health problems.

I’ve given this a lot of thought after my wife stopped going to our local game store over exactly this issue

When gaming hit a point where gamers weren’t a subgroup that was looked down apart anymore, people wanted to fit in. I recall people telling me they were gamers, yet they had only played 1 or 2 games (this was like 15 years ago).

I’ve had one of my co-workers try to interject into conversations about gaming, but all he knows is call of duty (this was recent).

This comic sets the gatekeeping bar extremely high, but there has to be a bar somewhere. Can you claim to be a gamer because you played bejeweled a year ago for like 5 minutes on your friends phone? Set the bar too low and the word “Gamer” loses any meaning.

It’s hilarious that this happens to both sides. I used to work at Circuit City and would sell MP3 players. Some lady came in to my section, I greeted her, and she instantly asked if there was a female associate that could help her. I’m like okay…? Turns out she thought I was trying to scam her by talking to her (even though we aren’t on commission, I earn the same amount whether you spend $1 or $1000).
