When I log into a game and see people I used to play with that haven’t been on in years, I am genuinely filled with a sense of loss and sadness. Like I’ve been left behind or something. Good experiences like that from my childhood always make me feel a sense of longing and have me wishing for the way things used to be. A simpler time.

This reminds me of a message I received once playing Battlefield 3 when it first came out years ago. There was this random guy on my team, not even on my squad, who happened to die near me. I noticed he had the medic class equipped, so I picked up his weapon to switch to his class so I could revive him. I didn’t think much of it, but when the match ended, he sent me a message thanking me. He seemed really impressed by what I did and said something along the lines of it being resourceful and that not many people would think to do that. This must have been 2011, 2012 and I still think about it every now and then. It’s amazing how far one compliment can go. It’s made me spread more messages like that to others while gaming, try to make a community known for toxicity something a little more positive. FortNite for example is a game where I’ll make sure to congratulate the winner if I die close to the end of the game and can stay to watch.

I remember a few years ago someone on Reddit told a story about gaming with a guy who was ESL but he didn’t know who the guy was. His buddy always played a medic on whatever game and was always super nice and friendly.

Until one day his buddy said “Hey, tanks are in the street. I don’t know when I’ll be online again my friends. Thank you for all the fun times.” This was right as the Syrian civil way started.

    I wish I’d saved it.

I met a random American guy back on the launch of Modern Warfare 2 in a Search and Destroy lobby in Rundown. It was the second match of a call of duty game I ever played. I sucked ass, he sucked ass. But while everyone else was talking shit, we were the only two guys watching each others backs and trying to help the team win. We’ve been friends for over 8 years now and we talk every day. I’ve been to California 3 times and met him each time.

I was off work one day and decided to play Journey (PS3), I got stuck really really early on and noticed a guy stood next to a flag on a hill, so I went over. I had no way to communicate with this player, but he saved me and we played on, and on, and on. We completed the whole game together, from beginning to end we journeyed together, like two souls destined to cross paths.

I don’t know who it was, where they were from, or where they are now, but it was one of the best gaming experiences of my life.

    Thank-you, mysterious player.

Pretty sure there’s a backstory here that involves this player from a war-torn country who knew he wouldn’t be able to play OP again, sent this and was subsequently never heard from again. I wish I was joking but I also don’t know how I’d find the source

    This hits close.

I had a friend that developed paranoid schizophrenia. Started slowly at first, developing to the neighbors being against them. Then his mother was an alien. To questioning if I was a gov. agent spying on him, to whether or not I was a real person. To no responses at all.

Thirteen years of gaming together and I don’t know if he is alive or dead. I saved the world we built together in Terraria as a tribute and pop into it now and again.

    Life Sucks sometimes. 🙁

I had a guy who I barely know (but he is on my friends list) ask if he could pray for my upcoming surgery. I’m an atheist and I think he knew this but I said “yeah, sure” assuming he would later or it was just a thing people said. He spent 20 or so seconds praying for me over the mic and asking God to take care of me. It really hit me. I don’t talk to him much anymore, not that I did back then, but I’ll never forget him.

Had a similar experience in Battlefield 4.

Me and another guy both got on the elevator in Hangar 21 at the same time.

    Our eyes met.

    We gazed at eachother.

Seemingly like magic, we both started teabagging the air at the same time.

Once we reached the top of the elevator, we both knew.

He sent me a message: “I think we just became best friends”

    I agreed.

I have no idea what his name was, and I may never know.. but I’ll always remember him.

We shot several people in their stupid fucking faces together, for the rest of the game. It was a magical night.

I was playing GTA Online a while back, doing one of the random smuggling missions. It was just me and one other random guy online, and neither of us had our mics on. The game’s spawn glitched and spawned us both outside the airport on the other side of the unbreakable fence and next to the ocean. We just looked at each other and started running. It took about half an hour, but we ran around the entire airport, stole a car, and completed the mission. We then spent the next 4 hours playing and beating missions. He just sent me a message saying “gg” and logged out, and I never heard from him again.

    Good times.

I met this guy back on halo 3, I was like 13, and he was I think 18, we played almost every day for 9 years, I had some financial struggles and had to give up playing video games a few times so there were a few months where we didn’t play.

I eventually was able to start gaming a lot again and we played a few game of Halo MCC then he never got on again, this was a little over a year ago. Fuck I miss you Mike.

His original GT was Black AudioX

My gamer tag is Semi Hard.

Reminds of how I became friends with a guy on PS4 after a match on overwatch. It started with him sending me a message calling me a piece of shit player and that I should kill myself. Wrote back some witty response and he got more salty. Tells me I’m probably some stupid 10 year old kid and I should kill myself.

Called him out on how shitty of a person he has to be tell a kid to kill himself and how toxic he was being. Then he did something I never expected, he apologized.

He took back everything he said and asked for advice and how to be less toxic. I legit couldn’t believe it. He seemed genuine so we talked for a while. Eventually we started talking nearly everyday on the PS4 messaging app. He opened up to me and started talking about his depression, how overwatch was his only escape from real life. He thanked me profusely, saying I’ve helped him out a lot and that he doesn’t talk to anyone about it. Now we play games together every now and then and I check up on him every so often. He’s doing better I’m glad to say. Definitely the most unlikely way to begin a friendship

TL;DR : Guy is toxic and insults me on overwatch on PS4. Call him out on his shitty behavior. He apologizes,we talk, eventually opens up to me about depression. Now we’re friends.

Whenever I played Bloodborne way too much for my own good around a month or so after release, I had somehow managed to help the same guy through every boss fight. I knew it was him because he’d thank me in a message after every success, and I’d actually never deleted the messages.

He apparently would struggle for hours or for most of the day or even days against the same boss, and it was always our reunion that he would finally succeed. I remember whenever we defeated Gherman and the Moon Presence after the 4th try (each time, he’d apologize for dying), and he sent me probably the most heartfelt thank you and goodbye I’ve ever received from a stranger online.

“You never gave up on me.”
I’d never considered my impact on other players until after that, and I think about it from time to time.

I was like 14 years old when I was playing Halo 2 with a mic. Probably a bit too young to be talking to strangers online, but whatever. I’d go into games, go up to my teammates and ask if I can have a hug, a hug being just us crouching up and down together. In all my time I only ever had one person comply, and now 10 years later, we’re still friends and keep in touch. Granted, he’s moved onto PS4 and I pc gaming, our friendship has faded a bit since those days, but I still consider him one of my best friends.

It made me realize how many friends we all miss out on simply because we would never have had any way to meet them. Thanks, internet.

When I was 13/14, I played a game called Medal of Honor Allied Assault: Spearhead for PC. It maybe had an active player base of 1-2,000. This is about the year 2006. I met this kid who was a total squeaker 12 year old (I know, I wasn’t much better at the time lol) who cheated rampantly. Hated him. Two or so years later he joined my clan. It has now been over 10 years, I have met him multiple times in person as we discovered we live less than 6 hours away and his dad went to my university way back when and we cheer for the same team, the MN Vikings. Even went to a game with him and his dad. We are still “blood brothers” 12 years later. Video games are great.

I actually met my online gaming friend on the PS4. The game was black ops 3, not a game alot of people like but it’s w.e. I am a HUGE zombies fan, ever since world at war, so you could imagine how frequently I’d play. I was playing on the Map moon because I was attempting to do all the EE on BO3 (which I managed to do) and this guy joined in who was honestly really kind. I was talking about how my breakup (I was going through a 2 year relationship break up that was horrible) affected me badly to the point of anger and depression…and as we were doing the Easter egg this guy and I were talking about the deepest shit ever. He helped me get through my break up while I was a good listener towards his recent issues.

We finished the Easter egg, but I couldn’t help to find that this guy was just amazing to talk to. We added each other as friends. We played every other map and did their Easter egg, we introduced ourselves while we were at it, and we got to know each other deeply as fuck. It’s been more than a year now…and we have been close friends since. Honestly…even though gaming isn’t a thing for me nowadays (I literally only play on the Switch) sometimes, you can find the most valuable friends, all it takes is a match and a little communication.

Edit:sorry for any typos, I’m writing this through my phone lol.
