Logan, the son of Mary Beth Brulotte, was born 3 and a half months early. He only weighed 1 pound and 15 ounces. His low weight meant that he would have to spend a good amount of time in the intensive care unit. This also meant that Mary Beth would have to leave her son in the hospital for a remarkable amount of time. The LaGrange, Georgia resident hadn’t fully realized how guilty she would feel about this.

The drive from LaGrange to the children’s hospital her where Logan was born is 2 hours long. He husband’s job requires him to work a night shift and she also has a daughter who is 8 years old that she has to take care of. All this meant that she couldn’t visit Logan at the hospital as often as she wanted. “Every mom pictures their baby in their crib all alone crying,” Mary Beth regrettably told TODAY.

That’s why it was a relief when one day in late September she stumbled upon David Deutchman, who is 82 years old, snuggling with her sleeping baby. “I was heading in and was filled with anxiety. It was just wiped away when I saw him there holding Logan fast asleep,” she recalled, “He introduced himself as the ‘ICU grandpa’ and I thought, ‘Oh my God, this can’t be real. This man is like an angel.’ He said he heard Logan crying and asked the nurse if he could hold him and sing him to sleep.”

The ICU Grandpa has been volunteering in children’s hospitals for over 12 years. On Thursdays, he provides warmth and companionships to newborn babies in the neonatal ICU, whose parents can’t be with them at the hospital. “I like the fact that there’s some serious stuff going on and I have an opportunity to make a contribution and help out,” says Deutchman. He finds his youthful energy when he’s with these children. This man is an inspiration to all.
