We’re normally against locking threads here, but since this has already been removed for being a repost and many users seem to be resorting to name calling over various countries’ vacation policies I’m going to go ahead and lock it.

We should all be cooler to each other.

This is great. My favorite Thai restaurant closes for one month every year so that the entire family can go back to visit. I swear you can tell a difference after they reopen because everyone just seems happier.

As a Thai person who hasn’t seen their family in years this melts my heart

EDIT: thank you so much everyone for the kind words and suggestions. You are all humans being bros.

And then their are people like my mom who would read this sign and bitch about how the restaurant was being selfish for not opening.

When our local Thai placed closed for one day on the 4th of July, I kid you not she said “why couldn’t they have been closed yesterday? Then they wouldn’t have inconvenienced us”.

Of course she is also the type of person who goes shopping on holidays and complains that it’s so terrible management is making people work when they should be home with their families. But she doesn’t understand that her being there, shopping, is the whole reason people have to work. It drives me nuts.

2 weeks annual leave is considered a good thing in America?

Get nearly 3 times that by law in the UK.

I worked at an Outback many years ago when I moved two hours away for college. There was a gentleman named Fabian who rolled silverware for the day and night shift and once he was done after rolling out for the night, he’d go straight to Steak n Shake and work third shift. I worked takeaway in the back right next to him and I had sooo much downtime, I was usually just sitting there talking to him about life or played games on my phone. Let me tell you, this man is one of the most inspirational people I’ve ever had the pleasure of getting to know. In 2012, he had not seen his family in over 18 years. He had the opportunity of seeing his wife a few times but for very brief periods. He has three children that he had never seen in person, just only in photos. Every single cent he made, he sent home to his family. He was able to provide his children with an education and keep food on the table and a roof above their heads. Right before I left, he was telling me how excited he was because in less than a year, he would meet his goal in earning enough to be able to go back home, and live the rest of his days with his family. I don’t know if he ever was able to go back home or not but this letter hit me right in the feels.. I really hope he had that opportunity.

It’s amazing to see that those business owners had enough compassion left in them to really reach out and help that man be reunited with his family. Truly amazing!

Great sentiment but this honestly makes my skin crawl. Why play up the fact that you helped your chef. Not only is it something relatively private, but its obviously meant to show how “selfless” this place is. Just say we’re closed. Leave it at that

As a Brit, where employers must legally offer holiday time to permanent employees (I work in the public sector and I get 7 weeks off work a year) giving the guy 2 weeks holiday doesn’t sound that good. My first thought is “well so they should!” Or they should hire more than one chef.

When employers realise that solving human problems is within the reach of an employer and it’s also a problem they are tasked with solving. Creativity and loyality will flow. God blesses things like this.

Why is it that we Americans LOVE doing nice things and LOVE putting it on blast what a nice thing we did so that everybody can see how great we are?

I mean, do they truly send him to Thailand to see his family, or do they send him to Thailand so they can put it on blast and be told how great they are?
