Can confirm that feeding a mostly-blind snake is fucking difficult. Had an Eastern Hognose that was a living miracle seeing as it was old and was a bitch to feed, but god was she beautiful.

For real: Its the unnatural movement of it swinging. They strike a mouse on the ground and its like tackling a person, theres some resistance…when its dangling by the tail and swings they dont get the grip from the strike and their food craze makes them go nuts and try to strike over and over again.

Ive learned to feed mine by dangling the food next to the glass of their tanks so that way theres some solid if they get that glancing hit rather than a solid bite.

I had that breed of snake. Corn snake. It caught live ones like a bolt of holy lightning coming out of the sky. The doomed mice would be inside a small cardboard box after you bought them from the petstore. My snake had learned that when the cage opened, food sometimes followed. I popped it open one day, stuck the box in and was about to shake the mouse out, when my snake launched from her little plastic house, stretched all the way across her 3 foot tank and grabbed that mouse before it even left the box.

She got to keep the box as a second house for a few days.

That reminds me of when I used to play Counter-Strike: Source, where the most effective way to play against me was to crouch and stay still. I would keep expecting people to move, because who in their right mind would just stay still in the open like that, and I would consistently get wrecked because I kept trying to guess which direction they were about to move.

I’m glad to see that if I ever had to live in the animal kingdom at least I’d have a place with snakes.

I had a mate do this. After the snake struggled he dropped the mouse. The snake left it there for a day. Mate thought the snake didn’t want it so he took the mouse out. Snake bit him and all I could think was the snake wanted to get back so much that it didn’t have it’s meal.

I used to own a Ball Python that regularly left me asking the same question. I fed him live mice, but the mice would just sit there, let him miss, and sometime bite and scratch him!

He’d regularly ram his snoot at high speeds against the glass and generally make an ass out of himself. I wasn’t sure if this was normal behavior for a caged animal, or if he was blind.

I used to wonder if it had to do with smell, like the smell of me and the mouse entering his cage and mixing the air up confused him. He’d sometimes strike at me instead of the mouse, even though he was docile as hell. Targeting systems were just a bit wonky.

Looks like an instinctually programmed reflex that will catch a live and moving mouse a high percentage of the time. It just never evolved a reflex for catching immobile/suicidal mice dangling in the air.

Snakes have thermal based vision. A dead mouse has no body heat so it’s not easy for the snake to see it.
