One of the lead stars of the hit show “Grey’s Anatomy” has some real-life medical news to share with us all. Actress Kate Walsh is used to playing doctors on tv, but nothing could have prepared her for the health scare that affected her own life in the recent years.

Walsh had been diagnosed with a brain tumor back in 2015. It was later confirmed to be a meningioma, a tumor that arises from the lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. “I was shocked,” Walsh said as she recalled the moment doctors revealed her MRI results. “It was not what I expected.”

Within three days of the diagnosis, Walsh underwent surgery to have it removed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Luckily they were successful in removing the tumor. Doctors tested the mass and confirmed that it was benign.

So, what signs prompted Walsh to go see a doctor in the first place? Well, she began finding it hard to concentrate. Her balance was off, and she developed painful headaches. “I would reach for words or thoughts, and I just couldn’t finish them,” Walsh said.

She also was extremely fatigued, so much so that it was hard for her to get through everyday life. “I could drink five cups of coffee and not wake up,” Walsh said. Her symptoms only got worse and her friends and family took notice. They urged her to see a neurologist, which she ended up doing in 2015.  In fact, by the time she arrived at the doctor the right side of her face was drooping slightly. It was at that visit when doctors discovered the benign tumor. The tumor was just over 5 centimeters long and pushing on her left frontal lobe.

Even though Walsh had played Dr. Addison Montgomery on “Grey’s Anatomy” and the spinoff “Private Practice,” she was completely blindsided by the diagnosis as she began to play the real-life role as a patient. Walsh said that she wanted to go public with her battle and that it was intended to help raise awareness about this type of tumor that affects mostly women. She joined her co-star Patrick Dempsey along with other TV doctors in a campaign launched by the insurance company Cigna that encouraged people to get annual checkups.

“I was so relieved to know that it was something that could be fixed,” Walsh said about her tumor. Her advice to others: “Trust your instincts. Trust your body.”

Other celebrities that have gone public with meningioma diagnoses include Sheryl Crow, Elizabeth Taylor, Mary Tyler Moore and Maria Menounos.
