When I was 16 and worked as the pianist at a ski resort, the deadhead chefs in the kitchen introduced me to “Buddah”. Buddah was a huge raccoon that would come visit out back where we smoked cigs to get some free handouts. Every time we went out for a smoke we would grab a few warm dinner rolls (from a special heated drawer for the rolls) to bring out with us. We’d whistle for Buddah and he’d walk slowly towards us with his arms opened and fingers spread. He’d sort of waddle up to us (he was very overweight from this tradition) and delicately grab the warm bread roll from our hands and walk away with it. It was the reason I started smoking cigarettes. I continued to smoke cigarettes for 16 years because of Buddah. I finally quit but that damn Buddah raccoon almost gave me cancer he was so fucking cute.

My Aunt Tina had a pet raccoon named Ricky. He was feral but sweet. One day Ricky walked into the house, straight to the kitchen, opened the fridge and grabbed a pack of lunch meat. He then proceeded to walk out the back door, over a small hill, and was never seen again. Aunt Tina swears to this day that she saw a gaggle of babies following him, but it was just near dusk and might have been wishful thinking.

Edit: apparently a group of raccoons is called a “gaze”, but I’m leaving “gaggle” because those were Aunt Tina’s words.

I heard that they can get pretty vicious as adults even if you had tried to domesticate it as a baby. It would be really awesome to have a raccoon as a pet though.

**Edit**: For those of you upset that I used the term “domesticate” here is my response:

My bad, I rephrased this post a bunch of times before I posted it. I knew that the word domesticate didn’t feel right but my brain wouldn’t let me come up with anything else. I’m not very good at getting my thoughts out properly sometimes.

My wife and I raised 3 coon babies that were found without a mom. So much fun. They lived indoors a couple months and we gradually intoduced them to the outdoors. Eventually after a few months they stopped coming by the house. Such fun animals. I’d do it again of they weren’t so messy. They get into everything!

I went from laughing at a raccoon cuddling to laughing at a raccoon getting thrown down a flight of stairs. Reddit….. What have you made me become?!

Damn a lot of people talking about all the diseases they carry instead of realizing that it’s most likely been to a vet once or twice in it’s life….since it’s not acting like a wild animal an all.

Be careful! Although cute, once you let one live with you they will take over your home and your life!
    Same also applies for raccoons.

Look, I know they’re vectors for a lot of infectious diseases, and having one in my home will likely end in tears, but dammit, women are just so CUTE.

Just so we’re all clear here, trying to find a baby raccoon to adopt as my friend is a bad idea right?

Why do I feel like that thing’s one whim away from just ripping her ear off? It’s cute, sure, but that’s a wild animal.

I have a raccoon friend.. not quite that cuddly. But he is cool. Lives in a tree near my house. Was a baby when i met him, he was totally curious and definitely fearless unlike the 7 others that live with him.
He came up to me looking all cute with his hands out. So i decided to give him some cat food. brought out a bowl, poured a little in and sat right next to him as he chowed down. I heard like a stick fall in the woods behind me and just glanced back.. the second i did, he stopped eating, grabbed the entire bag of cat food and hauled ass up the tree.I was laughing and yelling at the same time. he had to have planned to take the bag the second i was distracted.. because it happened so fast, with just me glancing away.

he comes by still. obviously but we are better friends now. He’ll run up and yank on my pants leg asking for food. I can pet him but he dont get it. He does pet me sometimes.. well will tap on my leg with his hand. trys to pet the cat but he aint having none of that.

here is the [thieving bastard.](https://imgur.com/a/YQVbV) hard to stay mad.

(and yeah be careful, they can have rabies, i’m getting this wild one vaccinated but plan to leave him with his fam.. called around found vet that will sell an oral for them and i do pet him and interact with him, so its a good idea)
