5 Signs Your Dog Has An Ear Infection

5 min read

We love our dogs and want to make sure they are as happy and healthy as possible! One of the most common health problems that dog owners notice in their furry friends is ear infections. Ear infections may not sound like too big of a deal, but they can be really painful for man’s best friend (just like they are painful for us!) and it’s best to treat them as soon as possible. Look out for these 5 key symptoms that may mean your dog is suffering from an ear infection.

1. Your dog keeps scratching the outside and inside of their ear. If your dog seems to be very irritated by their ears, then there is probably something wrong. You have to look out for them trying to scratch an itch around their ear with their paw or you may even catch them dragging their head around on the floor.

2. You notice an odor in their ear. If you notice that your dog’s ear starts to smell it may be a sign of an ear infection. Take a look inside their ear to see if there is any unusual residue or swelling.

3. Shaking their head around. Dogs shake for a variety of reasons, usually to dry off when they are wet. However, if you notice your dog repeatedly shaking their head, you should take a look in their ear.

4. Discharge and scabbing around the ears. This symptom is a lot easier to spot and can be quite alarming. Ear infections can cause a brown, yellow or bloody discharge in your dog’s ear. Also, you may notice scabbing on the inside and outside of the infected ear.

5. Loss of balance. Just like us, a dog’s inner ear helps control their balance. When there is an infection present in their ear, it can lead to trouble balancing and even cause them to walk around in circles.

If your dog shows any of the symptoms and you think they may be suffering from an ear infection, take them to see a vet as soon as possible so that they can prescribe the correct medication and treatment.

Please share this information with your friends who have dogs to let them know about these alarming symptoms.
