Eating well can be hard and sometimes confusing. Sometimes we gain weight and don’t even know why! Many of us find ourselves in an office job at some point in life, and snacking while you are sitting all day can really lead your health into a downward spiral. But, there are things you do that you may not even realize are making you pack on pounds! Here are 5 reasons why you are gaining weight at work:

Eating for the company, even when you’re full

There are lots of temptations in the break room! Your coworkers probably bring in food to share all the time, not to mention the leftover catering food from meetings earlier in the day. Being aware of this food is important and you have to take deliberate steps to fight against the temptations of constant snacking. Try and take fewer trips to the break room or maybe even move those tempting snacks out of sight while you sit there.

You’re not eating mindfully

You agree to eat whatever your coworkers want to pick up for lunch, vowing to try and eat healthier the next day. But the day comes and the cycle just keeps continuing. In order to combat this, you should plan out meals for the week. You can really get your eating on track if you make a meal plan and really stick to it!

Lighting and room temperature affect your appetite

Research has found that there is a link between lighting and appetite. A dimly lit room increases your urge to eat, but light can help you feel fuller. So if your workplace has dim lighting, try going for a walk to add some light to your day! Soaking some sunlight and warmth on your break can help you feel satisfied and reduce your urge to snack throughout the day.

Working after hours

Working later hours may mean that you have less time to exercise and it might even affect your sleep patterns. A lack of sleep causes disbalance in the hormones that regulate your appetite and can increase the ones that cause hunger. In order to combat this, you should try your best to stay active throughout the day. Try and take the stairs more often and attempt to take a short walk during your lunch break.

Stress and deadlines put you under pressure

A high and constant stress level can quickly lead to weight gain. Higher levels of stress can increase levels of the hormone cortisol that is known for triggering fat and sugar cravings. Make sure to combat this by getting more exercise and making sure your sleep pattern is consistent.
