“Catastrophic failure” is the English description in Windows for the E_UNEXPECTED (0x8000FFFF) HRESULT error code. Interestingly the [documentation](https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa378137(v=vs.85).aspx) describes it as “Unexpected failure”, even though that is not what it is actually called in the OS. The [more technical list](https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc704587.aspx) does show the text “Catastrophic failure.”

So, by “catastrophic”, I assume you mean that the world is about to end. Do you know how long we have? Like, minutes or months? Just a ballpark guess is fine.

Used to work with a piece of software written in Delphi, literally every single error was “Catastrophic Failure”.

Turns out they just wrapped everything in a try-catch and used this error as a catch all.

It would’ve been nice to have a spare old laptop and a thumbdrive you don’t need anymore (4gb size), and just pull out and push in while you are watching a movie or show, and then at the end of the day, after like 200-300 insertions, test the file copying and response and see if it’s possible to kill a thumbdrive by taking it out of the computer without first “shutting down” the USB process.
