There are a lot of unfortunate things that happen in life, but we know that God is always good. Even though there is sickness, pain, and death, we as Christians can rest assured knowing that our home is not here on earth but in heaven. We have nothing to fear with God on our side, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t have to experience pain. One of the most devastating illnesses we see in today’s world is Alzheimer’s disease. This disease not only affects the person who is ill but their entire family as well. Here is some information you should know about Alzheimer’s and how you may be able to spot it early on:

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It is a progressive disease beginning with mild memory loss possibly leading to loss of the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to the environment. It is a disease that involves parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language, and can seriously affect a person’s ability to carry out daily activities.

Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. It affects mainly older adults, and the growth in the number of older adults is unprecedented. In 2015, 47 million adults living in the United States—15% of the population—were 65 or older. By 2060, that number is expected to climb to about 98 million, or nearly one in four US residents.

Alzheimer’s causes great concern to this aging population. Americans fear losing their mental capabilities twice as much as they fear losing their physical abilities.

Those with Alzheimer’s disease live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable. However, depending on age and other health conditions, survival can range from four to 20 years. Although scientists are learning more every day, right now, they still do not know what causes Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s Disease: Do you know these 16 warning signs?

In mild Alzheimer’s disease, a person may seem to be healthy but has more and more trouble making sense of the world around him or her. The realization that something is wrong often comes gradually to the person and his or her family. Problems can include:

Experiencing memory loss that disrupts daily life

Finding it challenging to plan or solve problems

Having difficulty completing or taking longer to complete familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure, like handling money and paying bills

Asking the same question over and over again or repeating the same story, word for word, again and again

Being confused with time or place

Having trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships

Displaying new problems with words in speaking or writing

Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps

Exhibiting decreased or poor judgment

Withdrawing from work or social activities

Manifesting changes in mood and personality, showing signs of increased anxiety and/or aggression

Showing a loss of spontaneity and sense of initiative

Getting lost in familiar surroundings, or misplacing household objects in odd places

Experiencing mood and personality changes

Neglecting to bathe, or wearing the same clothes over and over again, while insisting that they have taken a bath or that their clothes are still clean

Relying on someone else, such as a spouse, to make decisions or answer questions they previously would have handled themselves

Every individual may experience one or more of these signs in different degrees. If you notice any of them, please see your healthcare provider. Please share this story and let others know how they may be able to spot Alzheimer’s disease early on.
